<p>홍해에서 민간 선박을 공격한 예멘 후티 반군에 대해 미군이 군사 대응에 나서 고속단정을 침몰시켰다.31일(현지시간) 워싱턴포스트(WP) 등에 따르면 미 중부사령부는 이날 홍해에서 후티 반군의 고속단정 3척을 침몰시켰고, 승선한 승조원 전원이 사망했다고 밝혔다.<br />중부사령부는 “반군의 선박이 구두 경고를 한 헬기를 향해 발포함에 따라 미 해군 헬기는 자위권 차원에서 응사했다”며 “4척의 반군 선박 중 3척은 침몰시켰고 나머지 한척은 달아났다”고 전했다.</p><br />

<p>중부사령부에 따르면 이날 오전 홍해를 지나던 컨테이너선 ‘머스크 항저우호’가 후티 반군의 소형 고속단정들로부터 공격을 받았다며 긴급 구조요청을 했다. 이에 미군은 항공모함 아이젠하워(CVN 69), 구축함 그레이블리호에 있던 헬기를 출격시켜 후티 반군의 고속단정 여러 척을 격퇴했다.지난 10월7일 이스라엘과 하마스의 전쟁이 발발한 이후 미군과 후티 반군 선박이 직접 교전한 것은 이번이 처음이다.이란의 지원을 받는 후티 반군은 가자지구에서 대규모 사상자가 발생하자 이스라엘에 대한 보복으로 처음에는 홍해 인근에서 이스라엘과 연관된 선박을 공격하겠다고 밝혔으나, 최근 들어서는 이스라엘과 아무 관련 없는 모든 민간 선박을 상대로 무차별 공격을 자행하고 있다. 전쟁이 시작된 이후 후티 반군은 최소 23차례 홍해를 지나는 선박을 공격했다.</p><br />

<p>후티 반군의 공격을 받았던 세계 2위 해운사인 덴마크의 글로벌 해운기업 머스크는 지난 15일 홍해 항행을 일시 중단했다. 이후 약 2주만에 운행을 재개한 머스크는 운행을 재개하자마자 이번에 다시 공격을 받게 되면서 앞으로 48시간 동안 다시 홍해 운항을 전면 중단한다고 밝혔다.앞서 머스크 뿐 아니라 스위스 MSC, 프랑스 CMA, 독일 하파그로이드 등 세계 5대 해운사 중 4곳이 홍해 항로 이용 중단을 선언한 바 있다.이에 미군은 홍해 항로를 ‘마비’ 상태에 몰아넣은 예멘 후티 반군의 공격에 대응하기 위해 영국, 바레인, 캐나다, 프랑스, 이탈리아, 네덜란드, 스페인 등이 참여하는 다국적 안보 작전을 출범시켰다.</p>
